HOPE is committed to providing information about relevant resources to people in Onslow County and Jones County who may otherwise have trouble accessing information and services.

HOPE does the following:

  • Provide information and resources to any individuals who may have questions or be concerned about COVID-19. These individuals may or may not have been tested for COVID-19
  • Monitor daily symptoms of individuals and provide real-time feedback and referrals when necessary
  • Dispel myths and misinformation about COVID-19
  • Engage, educate, and empower communities to stay safe, connected, and to take control of their health and social outcomes

Health Options for Positive outcomEs (HOPE) is a community-based network committed to providing support and resources to address physical, mental, emotional, and social needs. HOPE works to leverage the expertise, trust, and core values of its community leaders to ensure culturally relevant and timely service delivery. HOPE provides assistance in:

  • Food bank
  • Communities of Faith
  • County Health Departments
  • Social Service Agencies
  • Training Community Health Workers to address barriers to accessing primary care, food insecurity, and even difficulty identifying reliable information about the pandemic

Community Health Workers

Where did you grow up?

I was raised in Jacksonville, NC, but matriculated through grade school in Richlands, NC.

How were you involved in your community before you became a community health worker?

I recently moved back to the area in the midst of COVID-19. I reconnected with my community through local churches and by joining the Outreach Team at the county library.

How has COVID-19 impacted you?

COVID-19 has caused me to pivot my intentions and goals. It has also made me more aware of my health choices specifically in how they affect others.

What excites you most about your work with Hope Onslow Jones?

I love serving others. If I can assist others in any way I am happy to do so. I am also excited to learn more about community outreach in this way.

Where did you grow up?

I was born in Germany and lived in the United States till I was 9, but spent the majority of my life in Puerto Rico. My island is my home and roots to my foundation. After losing my home to Hurricane Maria, my mother and I lived in Tampa Bay, Florida until I moved out here.

How were you involved in your community before you became a community health worker?

Before I began community work, I would always dedicate my social media’s to raising awareness and holding the uncomfortable conversations no one wants to have. On May 31st of this year, I successfully organized the Justice for George Floyd/BLM protest on N Marine Blvd. Since then I’ve been engaging with the community advocating my local politicians and community leaders, protesting on my weekends and helping out people whenever I can with money, food for homeless, donating water cases to Velvet Scoggin for her homeless packages drive, and starting the Youth Outreach committee with our local NAACP branch.

How has COVID-19 impacted you?

I lost my job to COVID-19 in March, and it put me in a really tight financial bind. I had to apply for unemployment benefits, and then the DES cut the payments short which took a toll on my stability. Due to the quarantine, all my classmates and I lost 2 months of practice in Cosmetology school. We were set so far back we were forced to cram two months of work in one. It was very stressful, but I rode out the waves.

What excites you most about your work with Hope Onslow Jones?

Thankfully with HOPE 4 Onslow Jones, it doesn’t even feel like I’m working. I get to do what I love, I’m a 24/7 Community Leader. I’ve always had a passion to do what’s right and I like to surround my life with constant helpfulness and genuine supportive people who have the same goals as I do, just like my team at HOPE 4 Onslow Jones. This program is exactly what our community needs and I can’t wait for us to get out there and improve our home.

Where did you grow up?

I grew up in Montcalm, West Virginia.

How were you involved in your community before you became a community health worker?

I was involved in my community by helping each of my neighbors. I stepped in when schools closed down for covid-19 out over 70 lunches a day. I work closely with my landlord helping any neighbor that may be in need the help. I also when covid hit went to school and gathered up children's belongings and school work for the remainder of the year. I help neighbor carry in groceries. I have an open door policy if anyone is hungry or in need of anything I try my best to help them.

How has COVID-19 impacted you?

Covid has impacted me from my son not going to school daily I'm having to learn to do Virtual School. It has been a very hard on him because he is a social butterfly. I also had to quit work because of no one to babysit my child. The covid virus has impacted our daily life what we knew before the virus hit.

What excites you most about your work with Hope Onslow Jones?

What excites you most about working with hope for Onslow I am excited to be a team member because I'm able to help my community. Get help to those who do not ask for help all the time I'm also able to help other people in my surrounding community. I can bring people together to solve problems that face our everyday lives. I hope to take what I have learned in my own life and help others. To be there for someone that may not have anyone. I'm super excited to see where this adventure takes me in my everyday life.. I hope to strive and be the best that I can.

Where did you grow up?

I was born in New Britain, CT but was raised in North Carolina (Salisbury, NC and Durham, NC)

How were you involved in your community before you became a community health worker?

Before becoming a Community Health Worker, I was involved in my community by being very active in my church outreach, volunteer work, and just helping those that are around me in need.

How has COVID-19 impacted you?

Covid-19 has impacted me in several ways. Especially since I am a survivor of Covid-19. It has made me more aware of my own health and the importance of making sure others are following safe practices and getting all the resources they need.

What excites you most about your work with Hope Onslow Jones?

What excites me about my work with Hope Onslow Jones is that this offers me a direct way to know that I am helping people. So many people are going through right now and are in need of support.

Where did you grow up?

Maysville, N.C. Jones County

How were you involved in your community before you became a community health worker?

I have been a pillar in my community. I have helped our local Fire Department with fundraisers, and the annual Christmas Parade. I also volunteer for the Food Bank at my local church. I am a member of the town Tree Board and Planning Board, Community Center Board and volunteer for Red Cross.

How has COVID-19 impacted you?

Covid 19 has impacted my life by preventing community involvement. It has kept me from my family and friends.

What excites you most about your work with Hope Onslow Jones?

It has given me a chance to assist my community during this difficult time.

Where did you grow up?

I am a native of North Carolina; being born, and raised in Jacksonville.

How were you involved in your community before you became a community health worker?

I worked in my community with the oppressed, low income, disadvantaged , and poverty- stricken providing assistance with food, transportation to various appointments, getting them food both physical and spiritual. I organized the food pantry in my local church that now supplies food to over 100 people each week.

How has COVID-19 impacted you?

The presence of Coronavirus has made it challenging for me to perform many community acts; which are of importance to my endeavors. The virus has made it difficult for me to visit the sick and shut -in, the elderly, the disable and those who are in need of help. I’ve had to learn, adopt,and implement safe practices and social distancing protocols to be able to continue serving the community. I also lost a cousin to the virus.

What excites you most about your work with Hope Onslow Jones?

I am particularly inspired to be able to reach out to as many individuals as possible whether poor, poverty -stricken, from all social and economic backgrounds helping them in whatever way I can. I look forward to sharing not only referrals and needed information, but also inspirational encouragement, words of hope and love.

Where did you grow up?

I grew up in a small community called Richlands, NC. It is located by Jacksonville, NC and Wilmington, NC.

How were you involved in your community before you became a community health worker?

Before becoming a part of this organization as a community health worker, I was involved in my community by being a part of the C.H.E.W program and doing a community health fair that provides the community with various health information and given them a chance to get their flu shot and stroke screening.

How has COVID-19 impacted you?

COVID-19 has impacted me by having to work longer and more strenuous hours in the emergency department. It has also cause body fatigue and a strain on my family as I care for others.

What excites you most about your work with Hope Onslow Jones?

The most exciting thing that I gain from working with Hope Onslow Jones is the satisfaction of being able to help people of my community gain the necessities that they need for daily living.

Where did you grow up?

I grew up in a little northeastern farming town in North Carolina called Harrellsville.

How were you involved in your community before you became a community health worker?

Prior to my involvement as a community health worker, I was very involved in my community.

How has COVID-19 impacted you?

COVID-19 has impacted me personally and professionally. I lost a family member due to contracting COVID-19 and as for professionally business has slowed dramatically.

What excites you most about your work with Hope Onslow Jones?

What excites me most about my work with HOPE Onslow-Jones is I am afforded the opportunity to perform on the frontlines to help those who are in need.

Where did you grow up?

I was born and raised in the County of Onslow County in the southeastern area of Jacksonville, NC.

How were you involved in your community before you became a community health worker?

I have been employed with various county, state and private sector human service agencies which promotes active work in the community to stabilize Mental Health and Substance Abuse needs. I have volunteered as a case manager with Tri Counties Crusader, Inc. While volunteering with Tri County, I was involved in coordination and delivery of advocacy services for those re-entering society after incarceration.

How has COVID-19 impacted you?

As I continue to watch the data and briefings on COVID 19 and its effects worldwide, COVID 19 has compelled me to want to do more for others in the community. I have had close friends that were personally attacked by COVID 19 and I stepped in to be one of their main social support for them while they were in isolation. At the time, I reflected on how important it is to care for others and be there for those not only when they are in distress but even when they are doing well. COVID 19 has impacted me to dwell on things I cannot change and learn that in a moment’s time, life can be forever changed by unforeseen circumstances. As a human services worker, I have always been understanding, but the impact of COVID 19 affecting so many people, helped me become more sensitive and attentive to my needs and my family. I now see my days different than pre-COVID 19 before as I have grown more spiritually and patient.

What excites you most about your work with Hope Onslow Jones?

The exciting aspects of working with Hope Onslow Jones is the ability to bring awareness to others, especially about COVID 19. I have been keeping a notebook and writing imperative data about COVID 19 since March 3rd, 2020. I was informing others via websites of any new information or the status of COVID-19 throughout various areas and regions. I joined a group which outlined topics to include nothing but COVID 19. I believe it’s important for others to be educated and aware to help change behaviors and keep others safe. Through Hope Onslow, I have found an opportunity to reach out to others and advocate for a change and help stop transmission of COVID 19. I have always enjoyed collaboration and coordinating services and being employed with HOPE Onslow Jones has provided me the opportunity to keep doing what I enjoy.

Where did you grow up?

I am from Clio South Carolina, however, growing up with my mother being a musician who played for many churches - It gave us the opportunity to travel and live in several different places. One of those places being St. Croix U.S Virgin Island for a total of four years. We went there as missionaries associated with the AME Zion Church to help rebuild two churches on the island. When our assignment came to an end, I returned back to my hometown of Clio and later relocated to North Carolina.

How were you involved in your community before you became a community health worker?

Before becoming a community health worker, I had been involved with community work through my job, my church, as well as personally. This past summer I worked with the school system preparing and delivering meals to families in need. Also, in past years I have helped with community clean-ups, clothing and food distributions and also visitation of the sick and elderly to check on their well being.

How has COVID-19 impacted you?

At the beginning of COVID, a part of my job was affected because I encountered a loss of income. Also, in the most recent months, I have had a couple of family members, as well as some family friends, that contracted the virus and passed away, some due to underlying conditions

What excites you most about your work with Hope Onslow Jones?

What most excites me about working for HOPE Onslow-Jones is the simple fact that the job is all about community service. Additionally I love the idea that we are ensuring that any person in the Onslow-Jones County area knows that there is help and we are here to make sure that their needs are met to the best of our ability. With every opportunity, I am given to serve, I go in looking to close the case with a positive outcome.

Where did you grow up?

I grew up in Jacksonville, North Carolina after I had moved around from Hawaii, to Maryland with my family before we settled right here in Onslow county.

How were you involved in your community before you became a community health worker?

I had been involved in my community through my local church and through protesting police brutality and BLM.

How has COVID-19 impacted you?

COVID-19 has impacted me through unemployment due to the jobs in my city shutting down in March.

What excites you most about your work with Hope Onslow Jones?

What excites me the most is definitely getting the chance to help the people in my community who need us the most. This is the perfect opportunity to show the people of Onslow and Jones county how much they matter to us.

Where did you grow up?

I was born in Jones County, Maysville, NC., and raised in Baltimore, Md.

How were you involved in your community before you became a community health worker?

I’ve been involved in many community committees. I volunteer as a member of the Maysville Town Planning Board, Maysville Tree Board, and New Hope Church Food Bank. I also assist with blood Donor drives in the community.

How has COVID-19 impacted you?

Covid-19 allows me to see how things can change in your life. It has changed the way I live and commune with my family and friends. Covid-19 has improved my mental and spiritual emotions, caring for others at another level. I have even shared tears for families, businesses, and countries because of the impact Covid-19 has created. I have become a better person with different values and goals.

What excites you most about your work with Hope Onslow Jones?

I love working to achieve a common goal. I know my background in Health Care has prepared me for the role of a CHW. I have been inspired by the goals and values of the organization. Hope Onslow Jones gives me the opportunity to educate and assist the community about Covid-19 and keeping safe during the pandemic. It excites me to know I have the resources to link potential clients to agencies for assistance. I enjoy connecting with other CHW, collaborating and discussing ways to improve, and accomplish ideas to support the community.

Pandemic Response Network (PRN)

PRN is a network of local leaders and community organizations who work in tandem to identify and address the health needs of Onslow, Jones, and Duplin county by:

  • Responding and connecting to residents' individual and county needs
  • Providing access to familiar faces who are trained and support residents (community health workers)
  • Training CHWs to address barriers to accessing primary care and food insecurity, and providing reliable information about the pandemic

PRN is committed to reaching high-risk groups, including:

  • Older adults and those who serve them
  • Essential service workers, including long term care workers and agriculture workers
  • Individuals unable to work at home and/or social distance
  • Communities of color, including non-English speaking communities
